I was working up in the north of Scotland, and found this old ruin.

Varrich Castle is located in the far north of the Scottish highlands near to the village of Tongue, Highland, Scotland. The castle, known as Caisteal Bharraich in the Gaelic language, stands on the foot slopes of the mountain Ben Loyal in Sutherland, on a local high point of rock, overlooking both the Kyle of Tongue and the village of Tongue. The castles’ precise origins and age are unknown.

The ancient seat of the chief of the Clan MacKay was at Varrich Castle, thought to be over one thousand years old, there are believed to be caves under the castle which were once inhabited by the Mackays. It is believed to be possible that the MacKays built their castle on the site in the 14th century, on top of an existing old Norse fort. extract from Wikipedia

Lovely composition. Beautiful subject and you’ve caught some excellent detail there. Great job!

  • Thank you very much Kevin. I was trying to get a better viewpoint, as the castle is actually quite high up above the sea. I would have probably managed this with my 12-24mm, but typically, I didn’t have it with me !!!

Cheers Gary, I’m well, but the good weather has evaporated and we have had rain today.

Wow!! very striking – love the old stones set against that fabulous blue sky…a rarity I’m sure!! LOL

  • Thanks Wendi. Despite popular belief, it doesn’t always rain in Scotland. In fact, I recall that we had 2 days of sun last year !!! :) Actually, it is not that bad really, and this year, so far has been wonderful. Hope you are well? Best wishes

Great shot! Lovely weather too! I think it looks more impressive from down below than when you are actually up. The views from the hill make up for it though :-)

  • Thanks. I totally agree with you about it looking more impressive from below, because of the ‘lack of space’ to make a decent pic, including the sea. Quite a climb up there too – not as fit as I used to be!!! :)

    Stunning composition and colours Gary.

  • Thank you very much Anthea. I was trying out a polarizing filter that I had just purchased, and I really like the way it has rendered the sky colours.
