Glorious Sky
I have never seen, in all my years as a “sky watcher”, anything quite like these end-to-end rainbows, up high in the sky. The phenomenon is called Tangent Arcs, and form when cirrus clouds have well developed columnar ice crystals drifting with their long axes almost horizontal.
The photo was taken from the jetty in Port Orford, Oregon as a Pacific storm was approaching from the south. Mt Humbug can be seen at the bottom-center of the image.

This is a triple rainbow, how lucky, you are and so very observant! The name of the mountain is so very appropriate, kind of like having the rainbows be an answer to the bah humbug! thing! Dee
Dave Pearson
Were you shooting towards the Sun? The reason I ask is that I can’t see how rainbows could ever look like that whereas what you’ve caught looks very much like a tangent arc.
Randall Scholten replied
Yes… that’s it! I had never heard of that. Thanks!!!

Oh MY OH MY OH MY!! Merciful Heavens!! What an EXQUISITE phenomenom! How lucky are YOU?! I’m soooooooo thrilled for you! ...and very glad that it was you who was there at the right place, at the right time, with that precious D700 to capture this ethereal occurance! Positive I would have just stood there with my mouth hanging open… and bungled the shot… or completely missed IT! This is just the BEST, Randy! My wool hat’s off to you! Well done!!
