Can’t think of a title and spent way too much time typing the description. Just want to post already. Here is a sting ray, taken at Seaworld Orlando. We fed them.. they’re cute.
I already talked on my FB why I was ok with going to Seaworld (as a lot of animal rights activists are not)… here we go, I think the education the facility provides is vital for people who might otherwise not understand the importance of the Oceans. Pretty much everything involved information on conservation efforts. And I respect that. A lot of the creatures we saw weren’t stolen from their homes.. they need medical assistance or were in a dangerous environment. I can’t say all of them are simply because I don’t recall but I can check online. The dolphins were, and they don’t make them do tricks.
When it comes to captivity I think enclosures need to be the best they can possibly be. I do think the dolphin enclosure should be larger so they can swim farther distances like in the wild. I don’t like that they have Orca whales. They’re just too big & humans can’t handle them. At least this is my conclusion from the violent incidents at Seaworld. Seems to always involve an Orca… They are beautiful creatures yes, but I just don’t think it’s possible to have them enclosed at this point, without causing harm to them or the people who work with them.
I know about the recent incident with the dolphin that bit a young girl’s arm. I fed the dolphins with my 10 year old brother at the exact same place. What people need to know is that the instructors are very clear on what you are not supposed to do. Lifting the fish carton anywhere near the ledge was one, and you must be looking at the dolphins if you’re holding either the carton or a fish. I don’t want to sound rude to the child but her parents should have been paying careful attention. When I was there the instructors again, very clear that dolphins have sharp teeth and can hurt you if you do not do what they say. Maybe the instructors weren’t as thorough, maybe the family didn’t pay attention. I don’t know but when I went I made sure my brother was focused on the dolphins when he fed them & followed the instructions provided. The mother disabled commenting on the video so I’m guessing people had the same thought about it I did.
The gist of it is… Seaworld is ok based on their conservation and education efforts, but can improve. If anyone wants to discuss or disagrees with me please let me know your thoughts.
