This has been the holy grail for me since I got my camera. Living in Far North Queensland, we tend to have monsoonal rain more often than not. So that means proper chain lightning is rare. So I had been out on one of my excursions to take some new photos and at about 2pm, I was heading home. I drove into the most amazing torrential downpour. The visibility was less than 10m and I had to slow the car right down. Then there was lightning all over the place. I stopped by the side of the road and tried to get a shot there, but my poor camera and I were getting soaked. So I knew that about 5km ahead, there is a very small place called Fishery Falls and I headed straight there. There was an amazing display of lightning going on as I drove toward my destination. I finally got there and found shelter under a large tree. Yeah I know, not too bright, but I was determined to get this shot. I must have taken at least 200 photos with the camera in rapid succession. However it can only take 28 consecutive shots before I had to stop and let it catch up. And of course, all the best strikes happened while I was waiting to reload. I wasn’t even sure that I had captured any strikes by the time the storm passed. It wasn’t until I got home and downloaded the shots to my PC that I discovered the shot above and this one:

Nice one Bill and well done. On my first visit to South Africa we had the all time mother and father of a thunder storm, on my birthday actually. The locals said it was amongst the fiercest they had ever seen. At the time we were out at dinner and so my camera was not to hand – shame. It was just about continuous so you could have pointed the camera in any direction, pressed the shutter at random and would have been guaranteed a good snap. I know the scientists use a “black box” to trigger their cameras but have no idea as to how practical it is for amateurs.

That’s a real shame you didn’t have your camera with you Martin. I don’t go anywhere without mine these days. You never know what is going to happen LOL.
