This was the only family I have seen this summer. Usually I see more. They are very shy and don’t like for people to get too close. They were getting ready to swim away.
Ray4cam

What a beautiful little family you have capture, great treatment.
Jane Best replied
THank you Debbie. I thought the little ducklings were as cute as they could be.
Ranald
Such a joy. We keep scaring a family down the river with our kayaks. Not intentionally. So it’s nice to see what they look like when they aren’t running away! ;-)
Jane Best replied
THank you Ranald. I think they are very people shy and skittish. I saw some other mergansers but when I tried to get close enough to get a decent shot, they disappeared. These were getting ready to disappear. I really enjoy seeing these mergansers, don’t you?
Waleska Luker

Jane Best replied
THank you very much, WaleskaL!

Stephen Thomas
Great family photo! Just wonderful!
Jane Best replied
Thank you Stephen. This lake in your lovely area. Are you familiar with it? I really enjoy seeing these lovely merganser ducks. They seem to be “people shy” though.
Carla Jandelle...
she definately does have a striking ‘doo’...lol
i’ve always loved the male hooded mergansers ‘doo’ also! :o)
Jane Best replied
Believe it or not, I don’t think I have ever seen a male merganser-or at least an adult one. I wonder where they hide. Until I looked them up in the bird book I thought males and females looked alike-as loons do.
Carla Jandelle...
ahhh…i’d never seen the females till this past winter. the hooded are my favorite of all the ducks! they’ll puff up their doos and just preen for the females! i don’t get to see loons often? but when i do…early morning when everything is still quiet is just the best time

Two roads diverged into the Lake of the Woods, and you—
You took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference!

Thanks Doreen! A neat poem and definitely all the difference.
