I’ve been mad about photography since I was 12, when I was given a Kodak Instamatic as a Christmas present. Bought my first 35mm SLR at 20, and learned how to do my own b&w processing. At that time I had dreams of becoming a professional photographer, but could never afford enough film and darkroom chemicals, and always had too many other demands on my time to get really serious about putting together a decent portfolio.
Fast forward 30-something years, and I still don’t have as much time as I’d like to devote to photography, but no longer have to worry about buying film etc. I bought my first digital SLR, a Nikon D90, in December 2010, and am loving the freedom to take as many pictures as I like without worrying about film costs. The digital darkroom is a whole new learning curve, but I’m enjoying it immensely, and it sure is a lot less messy than the traditional darkroom. I’m gradually getting the hang of Photoshop, and now, having been inspired by the work of RedBubble member Echo7, I’ve just begun exploring the magical world of HDR.
For my “real” job, I teach ICT to primary school kids, aged around 5 to 12. I get a lot of satisfaction from that, but I’m finding it harder and harder on work mornings to resist the urge to just drive straight past the school and go photo hunting instead, lol.
I have no illusions about the chances of becoming a professional photographer at my age, but am very happy that finally, thanks to digital, I can consider myself a serious amateur, and if I happen to sell the odd piece on RedBubble, well, that will be a bonus. Happy to have become a Bubbler, and looking forward to engaging with this vibrant community of artists.
