Fernand's dream by sophia burns

Currently unavailable for purchase

The story goes that the man you can see on the portrait is called Fernand. He lived at the beginning of the 20th century and his job was to repair umbrellas. He would walk from village to village cover about one thousand miles a year. In 1932 he died near the village I live in. Last year during a festival, we were a few artists to decide to create works on Fernand. I made this installation untitled Fernand’s dream as I imagined that he would go to sleep each night dreaming of colorful umbrellas………….
This is the final installation……in a bar in the same little village, people could buy the little umbrellas for 10 euros so after a while the installation changed entirely as there were not any left!

After graduating with honors in 1995 with her installation work from the Art School in Aix-en-Provence and concluding an art practice-led doctoral research in 2004 in Montréal, Sophia started to teach painting in the south of France. Here she pursued her practice as a painter with a focus on space and the language of abstraction, and her drawing practice for which she was commissioned on several collaborative projects creating illustrations and visual diaries for authors.

Oh this is such a fabulous installation!! I love how you arranged them all, they are all so gorgeous and rich !!

  • thanks for comment on umbrellas….I thought it was a funny installation, the thing is the man you see in portrait is called Fernand Besnier he lived at the beginning of the 20th century and repaired umbrellas. He died on a road not far from the village I live in 1932. We were a few artists to do art works about his story and I came up with this idea, the work is called Fernand’s dream…….

    Magical :)
What a lovely way to honor Fernand

  • I hope I honored him and that the artists did too by doing this work, funny thing is that I tried to imagine this man, nobody really knew suddenly being after 8O years the star of a festival….I really wondered what the stars were there to tell us about Fernand….. I’m sure he was a poet….
