Planet Aurora:
Not a lot is known about the place except what we can scan from orbit. The first expedition’s report described an incredibly temperate Earth-type planet under a yellow sun, very lush plant life, no sign of human presence. But their reports stopped suddenly, and we are assigned to investigate. There had been no emergency reported, and the benign nature of this beautiful world suggests equipment malfunction. And as team Bravo systems engineer, my pack is the heaviest, containing replacement parts for their communications gear.

We parked our small lander and quickly found one of the 10 entrances to this massive labyrinth, last reported location of Alpha team, and right away the debate begins, how can a natural formation be so symmetrical, and why, if no civilization has been found, is there a pervading sense of ruins everywhere you look?

All four of us are in high spirits though, the summer-like weather, the continuous heavy scent of flowers and beautiful landscape lending to an almost holiday mood, but I am bothered by the sheer vertical walls in this maze, and looking back toward the entryway, I have a profound feeling of having forgotten something.

Our first look at one of the monumental monoliths surrounding the interior of this confusing place, first impression to all of us was of a crumbling castle, but that has sparked numerous hilarious comments about Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, merry men and the like. I seem to be the only one trying to establish landmarks here. And we probably should pick up the pace, the sun appears to be sinking.

This formation’s resemblance to a staircase has given the comedians in our group even more to joke about, and on an inexplicable whim, I have decided to climb it to get a closer look at the castle-like monolith. Giggling all the way to the top, I’m surprised that the floral scent is even stronger on the breeze up here, a hint of rose, and I am relieved to escape the steep walls enclosing the terrain down below.

I better get back to the team, the sun appears to be sinking, and I seem to have spent more time up here enjoying the view than I realized, the warm sun and perfumed breeze are almost intoxicating. Well, I can hear my team members laughing uproariously in the distance, but they could have waited for me, I started to call out to them, but just couldn’t, it would just be wrong to disturb the utter tranquility of my surroundings. Good thing I got rid of that heavy pack and annoying helmet, the sun appears to be sinking, so now I can catch up with them.

Even in such a huge labyrinth as this, I am starting to feel like I’m in familiar territory, although my time sense is off. I am sure we started exploring first thing in the morning, but it seems like early evening now, yet there’s just no point in worrying, everything just looks and smells so good, and I see up ahead a very familiar curved wall, I know I’ve been in this area before.

Well, finally, I guess I wasn’t gone as long as I thought, I can see dozens of the castle folks waving me on to hurry inside, even though the sun appears to be sinking, I’m still in time for the feast, everyone’s so happy, all my friends are here, and they remind me there’s the Vanishing Dance tomorrow, I’m so tired and everyone crowds around me and is so attentive and helpful, I’ll just have a nap before the banquet

The Vanishing Dance was this morning, just as fun as I remembered, we all streamed out of the manor to a clearing just outside and joined hands in a wide circle around a curious rounded metal house on stilts, as we danced around it the vines and weeds and grass in the clearing sprouted and grew rapidly up the sides of the structure, faster and faster around and around we danced, dizzy and happy, while the mound of vegetation thickened and enveloped the object completely and burst into fragrant blooms, we all relaxed laughing, then, in the soft grasses, bathed in warm sunlight, and a hint of rose…

Wonderful transportation into the realm of your concrete imaginary reality… and the Vanishing Dance reminds me of the Dervishes’ Dance with a hint of stage magic. All is well and possible on the other side of the fences of perception.
    Great story my friend.

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Vasile, the idea of a “better” reality just around the corner has followed me since small childhood, when my imagination was almost too big for a small body.

    Enjoyable read syd

  • Syd Baker:

    Thanks lots!

I think you missed your calling, Syd. You should be over with those 20-somethings at Electronic Arts. Of course you would have to change your tone – "I felt something strange come over me. I just had moments to escape the viny tentacle, race back to my dropped pack and pull out my Ultra-Betazoid Zombie Blaster . . .. . BBBBBBB ZZZZZZZZZ z Zap Zap,, brrrrr w w woooo w wwwwww Eeeeeeeeeee !!!!!! Those little bastards! Teach then a lesson or two. – AGH!!!!!! – and then the “Don’t forget RedBubble Etiquette” sign appeared in my comments window and the exquisite moment was lost – to a hint of roooooosssssssss . .. .

    Dave Martsolf

Syd, this is really great! Really! Loved it.

  • Syd Baker:

Thanks Dave, this was actually 2 waves of inspiration, the story changed just as I was ready to upload, called for a couple new renders, and that she blows! And I don’t really think I could keep up with anything 20 year olds can do, yikes!

  • Bunny Clarke

    Bunny Clarke

Bravo! Applause! Magnificent works. Splendid creations and work. Love the images and the story. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!

  • Syd Baker:

Gosh, thank you Bunny, as I was explaining above, the original description took a right angle turn in my head, mostly from the lighting and colors in these, got a mood going and off I went!

  • Keith Reesor

    Keith Reesor

Love the story and images Syd!!
It goes great with Space Gas!!
Received it yesterday and I’m on my third listen through now!!
It really grows on you!! I’m quite impressed and thank you very much my friend!!
    Love Clams!! :)

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Keith, and glad you like the disk, I had a few fairly odd instruments to work with, and Clams has a nice environmental ocean background.

  • Linda Callaghan

    Linda Callaghan

great story and images Syd….well done!

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Linda, I think each one of these lends ideas for the next one, really fun!

  • AngelArtiste

    AngelArtiste

    Is it a real planet?

  • Syd Baker:

It’s a 3 dimensional place I created in the computer, then traveled all around capturing images, over rocks, between trees, and I can go back and visit any time I want, and see new sights. Always very entertaining!

  • Dave Martsolf

    Dave Martsolf

Replying to the 20-somethings comment – well, even if you can’t keep up they should be using your backgrounds and 3D vector sets as landscapes to plan their diabolical schemes. Great stuff!

  • Syd Baker:

You’re right of course, where do I sign?!

  • Dave Martsolf

    Dave Martsolf

Man, this is the curse of having grown up OUTSIDE the SYSTEM – whatever that is. Probably they are on the west coast. You’ll have to be sure to ask for a relo package! :-)

  • JenLand

    JenLand

And the crowd goes WILD!!!! Thunderous applause my friend! You are such an imaginative writer and creator Syd. Love the scent of roses, comes from the original colors I suspect. :o) Thank you so much for asking me for using my file. XOXO

  • Syd Baker:

I’m not sure where this came from, I know the original images were darker, the shadows more odd, and the mood that came from the light took on a ghostly feel, and that’s why some suggestions in the narrative are open to all sorts of speculation. But I could really SEE those castle people, smiling a bit too tightly, eyes a little too bright, crowding a bit too closely, and staring unblinkingly…

Hail the Master!! . . . Fantastic stuff. . . A great story to go with your marvellous images. . . Much applause, bowing and calls of ’We’re not worthy’. . .

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Hugh, this was an idea that went sideways, and much improved.

Utterly fantastic story and the images rock Syd. Your gift for both never siezes to amaze and delight the mind of the viewer. A place I would love to visit a while. Join the festivities and take in the offerings.. ~:)

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you LJ, somehow a bit of the Twilight Zone crept in while I was ready to upload these, I added one more and the words just popped out!

  • robpixaday

    robpixaday

    ::sigh::

    Magnificent!

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you, Robin, my whole world-exploring process changed with this one compared with originally just grabbing some cool images; you can see the actual “exploring” come out in This collection, check out the links at the right but in this one, our explorer actually got initiated into another dimension of this benign little world that smells nice… just as I was starting to upload the images, all these words popped out, I did one more render and rearranged the order, and here it is.

  • robpixaday

    robpixaday

OH, that’s so cool!!!!! I’ll go visit the link!!!!!

    thank you!!!!

  • Syd Baker:

Have you ever used BLURB to make a book? I’ve made 3, it’s really cool for getting something bound, but kind of expensive to try to sell there, but look around anyway.

  • zenati

    zenati

    thumbs up, very cool.

  • Syd Baker:

Thanks so much, I had been getting more and more involved with the descriptions of these planetary expeditions, the story popped out after the images were already done. Here is a link to the more significant other worlds if you’re interested, CLICK HERE and then try out the links listed on the right.

this is excellent Syd…some of your images are absolutely stunning…thought of making a book?Im working on a story…hope it turns out as well as this.

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you, glad you like this. I did make a book at blurb.com, CLICK HERE and to the right are 5 links to each story, plus a link to the book at Blurb.

  • Forgottenangel

    Forgottenangel

    Excellent! This is……perfect.

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Gabriel, in 2009 after abruptly being cast out of the corporate world, I found my image descriptions for Red Bubble getting much more elaborate, and then the series images started, then little stories, and then the above Hint or Rose, which popped into my head as I was already uploading the pictures. I put them all together in a self-published book here at blurb.com:
    Are We There Yet?

  • maxy

    maxy

Powerful, beautiful and so mysterious! I love it! The art is spectacular and really takes the eye in as I read your words. Ahhhh to fly those skies!!! To explore them and what’s below – a true adventure!!!

    Hugh Fathers

Great to come back to this one again Syd. To be able to tell a story and show the images, that is a fantastic thing . . .
