Exploration of Planet Gloss by Syd Baker

Posted on August 14, 2009

This was our away-team’s first look at the chosen exploration site, a beautiful chain of small islands in the southern hemisphere of this peaceful water world:

From orbit we had already learned quite a bit about the amazing life forms inhabiting the islands of Gloss, the first amazing fact is that there is no “food chain”, these silicon-based critters absorbed their nutrition from the sun, air, soil, and water, and therefore live in harmony without domination or competition. The second amazing fact is their symbiotic relationship with each other and their environment; many of the smaller creatures literally join themselves together and with other forms to become like another creature, perform tasks as a team, then disassemble and move on to other work. There is a level of communication among all these life forms that’s often audible as musical twitters and electronic squeaks, bass notes, burbles and just about every other sound effect you can imagine, the overall effect is quite humorous, especially observing the ant-like industry with which all these creatures perform their chores. Please follow along as I document the highlights of this memorable exploration.

This is an early morning view of the smaller islands that crowd between the two main land masses, as you can see they are all very steep, resembling monoliths, and all are very lush with plant growth, and the air is rich with the perfume of countless blooms. This little fellow sat in a clearing toodling like a harmonica until two large caterpillar beings scurried over, curled up and became wheels for him:

He even allowed us to pick him up, posed long enough for this shot, then proceeded on his way. He appeared to be transporting several dozen tiny passengers who all filed into his open front after the wheels arrived, and later we observed their departure at their destination, as well as the departure of the wheels. A little time to recharge, I guess, before the next jaunt. We caught this amazing sight later in the morning, huge air creatures slowly heading out to sea in formation, it took some time to find and observe the next flock, but they also seem to transport passengers.

They hold to a schedule, landing in the middle of the island periodically where hundreds of assorted smaller beings have been waiting to hurry aboard and disembark, then they slowly ascend as a group and deliver their charges to another place, like commuters riding the bus!Below is a shot of some kind of miniature moisture delivery creatures, they perch on the rocks down by the water’s edge, and condense moisture out of the air in their funnels, then they spin their little propellers and lift off:

These tiny fliers are small as hummingbirds, and whey they ‘copter to their designated shrubs, they start spinning their bodies until the moisture they’ve collected starts to spray out the top, and sprinkle onto the plants around them. They go back to the water’s edge, wait until they’re refilled, and proceed to find the next grove scheduled to be watered. The sounds they make are quite harmonious, like they’re all humming the same song while they work!

We didn’t see these structures all day, because they assembled themselves just at sunset, on most of the islands, all facing the sun, and then they started to play music. Not random sounds, but like an orchestra of bells, flutes, chimes and percussion, all playing the same song in incredible harmony, songs for the sun, I like to think.

All the activity around us stopped, and every creature and human just listened, until the sun finally dipped below the horizon, and it was off to sleep for one and all. You could just barely hear the musical towers taking themselves apart, like stage hands after a concert.Below, you’ll see one of my favorites, a lifter/transporter made up of smaller beings:

He was scurrying on multiple legs through the shrubs, and carrying what looked like a large yellow water balloon. He stopped at our approach, looked us over, held still for this picture, then was on his way. We never found out what he was carrying, probably moisture for some plant, or maybe he’ll throw it at somebody! It’s time to go for now, we haven’t even begun to catalog and identify all the beings that make up the inhabitants here, there are so many, and you won’t BELIEVE what lives in the water… So, until we see you next voyage: Blast off safely!

  • Syd Baker:

Blush blush, you’re too kind, LJ! It was Owlspook’s idea to place this in journal format, and boy it sure does flow this way, I put in a blog in the same format at this cool artist network site started by 1stAngel: CLICK

    LjMaxx

That explains why I couldnt find it in your gallery earleir so I sifted thru the pages. . 1st Angel looks good.. Your pic there is much easier to see too.. :)

  • Syd Baker:

It’s a neat place, very new and small, a talking place, and I slowly learned how to make a blog with pictures, small groups like recipes, and humor, marketing your stuff, it’s fun!

    Fantastic work!

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Joan, I’ve been having fun with weird landscapes quite some time, but the stories have started popping out recently.

What a wonderful way to display these images and story. Fantastic work. :o)

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Bunny, I’m going to do this with Planet Eleganz too! It was Owlspook’s suggestion to put it in journal form, and these last two have enough story to make it work I think.

Can’t wait to see what lives in the water!! Fantastical Syd!! :)

  • Syd Baker:

Thanks Keith, I did some cruising around right at water level, but will need to return at the proper time of day to observe .

    Awesome!

  • Syd Baker:

Thanks Brook, the words have started to flow ever since being ejected from the corporate life suddenly and unexpectedly, no surprise really when the shiny wingtip shoe is lifted from your neck, that repressed creativity bursts forth, eh? Loving it!

    It is really moving, Syd.
You are a perfect poet..it reminds me, and do not tell me why all he wonderful descriptions of the Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings. Why..? because the author like you seem to literally “live” in there, having a profound knowledge of this Land that transcend his daily routines, as in you, and let opens the true realms of where the soul wants to live…or not. But is there, with some knd of naive vision. And the ideas are fantastic. they are somehow premonitory for me. I have in mind the certanty that we will evolve to some more “ecological” world…and that way of feeding and relating among themselves and the rest, show that they are really “bocoming” the world around with a shareness that overcomes all virtues, like generosity, like love and that. They seem to be “pure love” as the magnificent energy that creates new things without regarding where these are individuals or collective.
And I have visited the origin of the Island..or Gloss…and seems incredible that silicon made machines, progressed with our brains knowledge have become so helpful in making out the realities of our “utopias”…a pity that there are many other human minds that are using the same wonderful energy for killing and destroying. Seems that it is unavoidable…unless we will evolve into another being..may be out ot our “humanship”.
Great, Syd…so wonderful to have it shown to us.
    Rosa

  • Syd Baker:

Once again you see straight to the core of things, Rosa, would you believe that I got the idea for the collective nature of Gloss while in the middle of terrible traffic, crowded cut throat drivers, dangerous and inconsiderate, I kept thinking it’s possible for every one of these maniacs to cooperate and lend a hand instead of creating all this friction. It is sad to even consider that human nature being what it is, any form of utopia is impossible, but I always see the glass half full, and have faith in good hearted beings, and I don’t believe the powers that be would allow us to sink into oblivion without lending a hand. And yes, ultimately we will evolve into something higher, no doubt about it. Thanks for sharing!

wow syd! it really does work well as a journal entry! (smile) …. might have to take up my own suggestion and do one of my own (grin) … of course this being a collaboration of sorts I guess I share one already (big smile) … great work syd and thanks for taking us for a ride through your imaginative mind (big smile)

  • Syd Baker:

I well remember as I was trying to make it alive through some really nasty rush hour traffic, thinking what would it be like if all these earth beings tried to help eachother instead of being such jerks, and planet Gloss, the ultimate co-op was born.

  • owlspook

    owlspook

with a world so entwined it would seem that it would be best to keep exploration at a minimum lest we upset the balance … hmmm….

  • Syd Baker:

Quite right, especially as there are schedules to keep by those flying transporters, just like a city bus. Cute how the small ones allow us to photograph them, even pick them up.

  • zenati

    zenati

stunning, you should write a graphic novel. very interesting narration.

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you, my friend, the idea of every being getting along was formed, ironically, in the middle of killer rush hour traffic, a desperate hope. Plus, I’ve always liked the format of an explorer’s notes, or an Away-team’s report.

your way to tell stories is wonderful, I wish if things step up and get to a serious stage. telling stories is more than a gift it’s a serious skill.

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you so much! My mother the English major would be proud. My favorite part of this one came to me right at the end, the second to last one, Songs for the Sun.

  • F.A. Moore

    F.A. Moore

    Killer. Amazing stuff, Syd.

  • Syd Baker:

Thank you Fran, I was trapped in fast murderous rush hour traffic wondering why we can’t all just get along when I got the idea for this planet full of cooperative little beings. The story developed as the images did.
