Theater Of The Absurd: Eating With Chapsticks

I don’t know what to say about this one… I remembered some ancient art Decco cartoon work with heads like billiard balls, and made my own, long ago.

You may want to avert your eyes…

This was just before the computer came to my house, then everything changed…

NFS, because of the brand name.

Theater Of The Absurd: Eating With Chapsticks belongs to the following groups:

    Amazing creative Syd!

  • syd baker replied

Thanks Teresa, not every day you see a talking baked fish, with lemon!

Nice artwork Syd – I still have a hankering for the brush, but have to admit that digital creations can be fantastic. Just hope they don’t take over entirely. I guess Disney built up an empire based on the circle – Mickey and co. I usually start my cartoon caricatures with lots of them joined together.

  • syd baker replied

Fortunately I still draw lots for work, mostly pencil character concepts, and keep my hand in it, even some 3D characters start out in sketch form. This is the last of the best Old Stuff!

  • syd baker replied

That’s right, if we all lived in teepees we could still watercolor!! And all the fish would feel good!

I like the Thirties-style of the cartoon and the irony.
    Cheers.

  • syd baker replied

The irony is so thin it borders on the Insane… but the doctor says I’m doing much better!

My Dad loves bad puns, “groaners”, but this one got twisted and took off at right angles, especially when the fish decided to talk.

At the time I thought this was too weird to consider, but there it sat in my head until I had to put it on paper.

    excellent …you are awesome !

  • syd baker replied

Ah, thank you! It works, too; you want to get the fish to talk, you just do that. Doesn’t work with hamburger, for obvious reasons.

I love this! It brings to mind the brilliant animation in the Betty Boop cartoons.

  • syd baker replied

Thank you! I think you’re right, I remember characters like him also from 30’s magazine illustrations.

Hilarious, smart alecky, clever, and smart – PLUS, the delightfully cheesey character is perfect for the text/slogan!!! Timeless, like an old ad! Divert my eyes – are ya kidding??? I can NEVER unsee THIS!!!

  • syd baker replied

I think this is the oldest piece in here, pre-computer, yeah smart aleck is right, cheesy is right, especially that suit! And I’ve been telling folks, don’t try this if a talking baked fish disturbs you, and don’t waste your time trying this on a steak. Or a hamburger. That would be crazy.

    artist4peace

ya know ,they could really use that to day for an ad…but you’d have to negotiate a good fee for yourself outta it!!!
now that would ’’Really be eatn’ w/chapsticks” and aaahhhh very soothing indeed! : D

  • syd baker replied

The fish would probably work for scale.
