Once again outstanding efford friend! The fans stand and shout “Wicked Creation!” Excellent all round Syd!!!...)o(

  • syd baker replied

Thanks DS, these last 3 were the most worthy of the old art, and include the Ultimate Kitty, who was never replaced. (a whole different story!)

damn Syd! if you are not a pro cartoonist, you damn well should be!
    excellent!

  • syd baker replied

Thanks you my friend, the bite in the butt is that I’ve worked for Hallmark over 18 years, and in all that time, they don’t “get” these, not interested. Doh! So, still on the side, at least they don’t get cute-sified and watered down, that’s a big plus!!

  • JenLand

    JenLand

Yes Syd! Be glad that the corporate giant doesn’t get them – so true!! They would be completely changed…..... And they should never be!!! Love your cartoons pal!!

  • syd baker replied

Hey Jen, sorry I missed this comment a few days, you’re absolutely right, there used to be this weekly meeting where you’d go in with your work and face a row of art directors, we called the Dreaded Committee, like some commie tribunal, knees shaking, insane wielding of power to show worth by insecure weaklings, argue over infinitesimal trivialities, contradict and stop all progress… good thing the world has changed, eh? Thank you, my good friend!!

  • Scott Bricker

    Scott Bricker

prob a good thing that they don’t…a good sign…tell me you are not the ‘schmarm’ man for them…say it ain’t so, Syd!...heheheh

  • syd baker replied

My job is a toy maker, concept designer of critters and characters, and I have to figure out how to make them move, or sing, talk, right now working on a cat and rabbit riding double on a Vespa that scoots across the floor, no schmarm, unless that’s some new type of stuffing…

  • JKKimball

    JKKimball

wonder if those monsters have considered putting together a team? fantastic as always Syd!

  • syd baker replied

    They’ve ALWAYS been a team…Mwa-ah-ah!!! (and thanks!!!)

Your cartooning skills blow my socks off.. your humor always has.

  • syd baker replied

I used to wish Hallmark would take notice, now I’m glad they leave my good stuff alone, or they’d mushy it up for sure!! And these aren’t even the weird ones!!

  • kreesor

    kreesor

Fantastic creation Syd!! Love the monster in the middle right to upper right window!! :)

  • syd baker replied

Thank you my friend, you see the cat sees them, but every time i turn around they duck out of sight—happens every time, they’re very good at it!

  • owlspook

    owlspook

did I ever tell you I saw the 1957 world series Braves vs Yankees? I was quite young then (grin) ... ah the good ol’ days (grin) ... was a big fan back then (smile) ...

love this work of yours … you don’t need hallmark for these you’ve got RB (big big smile)

  • syd baker replied

I stopped wanting Hallmark to notice these when an art director friend of mine told me “you realize they’d change it all around, and then have someone else draw it, don’t you, and they wouldn’t pay you either…” Hah!

This was when I used to stay up late and get up late, during the “bad old days” of freelancing… Now I watch football and drive an suv and own a house, and still wonder why my hair is migrating like the wildebeest..

  • owlspook

    owlspook

then the heck with Hallmark (grin) ... ah the good ol’ days (grin) ... ya and my feathers are white and thinner than they ever were (grin)

  • syd baker replied

Yeah, doing your favorite thing as a job is over rated, and the card designers all have to compete with eachother, not like where I work… and t least I know my limitations when it comes to this stupid Aging thing, think I’ll go shake my sponge mop at some teenagers, but first I’ll put on a flapping bathrobe…

  • JenLand

    JenLand

There you go again Syd with the mop and the bathrobe! I think you enjoy that immensely! Just like the old lady whose flowers I used to accidently trample as kid and she’d forego the mop and all but would call my mom and then I’d get the dickens from her! Be careful with that O’Cedar Syd, you could put somebody’s eye out with it!! ha ha ha ha

  • syd baker replied

Well, it’s not like I’m going to run with it! Hmmm… maybe a string mop, easier to put on a puppet show…

  • JenLand

    JenLand

Dual purpose mop!! Scare nasty children and then entertain them….......good plan! hee hee

  • syd baker replied

    Toupee?

  • owlspook

    owlspook

well ya I agree .. turns fun into work at times … it is over rated … right now I’m in the middle of doing a business plan (ugh) to get some funding for a new computer system and software and and … and it’s a pain in the butt .. however it most likely I’ll get the funding (not a bank .. a grant) for it but it’s the pain of doing it (sigh) ...

as for the aging thing .. I keep forgetting I’m not 33 anymore (big grin) ... and as for teenagers LOL … go for it syd .. I can see you now chasing after them with your sponge mop in hand and you bathrobe flapping in the breeze LOL … ya otta do a cartoon with that image LOL …

  • Lucindawind

love it ! love the cat lol

  • syd baker replied

True story! Every time the cat glanced out the window, they duck down, I turn around, Nothing! the game goes on, cat glances out, they duck, I turn around, you see how it goes… (there’s a whole story about that cat if you want to hear)

  • zooreka

    zooreka

Freewkeelin Sydklin and Fad Eddie’ s Gato – sure reminds me some of the comic strip. Great it was too.

Beuatifully worked plate this Syd! Love the idea of the freeloaders and how you handled the broadcast text… all ties together wonderfully!

    Well done….

  • syd baker replied

Thank you, my friend, that’s actually a true story, and that’s the rental where I used to live with the ultimate cat, he would suddenly stare out the window, monsters duck down, I turn around, nothing there, little while later, repeat… and so on!!

  • Viv King

    Viv King

I agree with all the above- Hallmark don’t know what they lost- someone with a great sense of humour and imagination. They are the losers!

  • syd baker replied

Ah thank you Viv, they probably would kill my work with corporate love if they got their hands on it, so it doesn’t upset me any more!

  • Teresa P. Pelaez

    Teresa P. Pelaez

    Creative, excellent!!!

  • syd baker replied

Thanks Teresa, it’s a self portrait with my cat, and he used to suddenly rush to the window, and when I looked, all the monsters had ducked down!

  • LauraHartley

    LauraHartley

AHA – your rescue pictured! Our cats see stuff all the time – gazingntently at “nothing….” how I wish I were so perceptive…or NOT!!! YOu are like a cross between Gaham Wilson and National Lampoon – you ROCK!

  • syd baker replied

Ahh, high praise indeed! Actually I think he was faking me out, eyes getting all big and round, and he’d laugh his butt off in private!

  • MuscularTeeth

    MuscularTeethVoted Most Helpful Bubbler

    this is greeat.

  • syd baker replied

Thanks MT, my cat jumped up to stare out the window 4 times that evening, and of course the monsters all ducked down while my kitty laughed his little white butt off!

  • LoveMy7Cs

    LOVE THIS!
    Very well done :)

  • syd baker replied

Hee hee, this is a true story, my cat would suddenly look out the window, and when I looked, they all duck down… then he does it again, and again, and got me every time. He thought it was hilarious!
