Cape Spear is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located at the most easterly point of land in North America, it is now a national historic site, after many years of providing continuous service as an manned lighthouse. In 1839 it was restored in appearance and shows how a lightkeeper and his family might have lived in the mid-19th century. During the second world war, Cape Spear was used by allied forces to protect the entrance to St. John’s Harbor.
