Re-visiting older work I did…this one from college…my second year, when I was about 19.
My first year of college….I thought I was invincible. Being a diabetic and my first time away from my parents, I believed I could do anything and have no repricussions. I learned the extreme hard way how wrong I was.
I went to stay the weekend with a friend……….without taking my medicine with me……..almost 2 hours from where I needed to be to get them. I did everything I normally did…ate…slept…drank…..again….being dumb. It didn’t take long for my body and extremely elevated blood sugars to tell me different.
By the time my friend figured out I was REALLY bad off…I was unconsious by the time I got to the hospital. I was carried in and do not know anything again until I woke up floating………looking down at myself on a bed with my mom screaming at me.
Strangely…my first thoughts were ‘oh gosh…if MOM is here I KNOW I’m in trouble…she’s gonna KILL me!‘……….my second thoughts? ’Why am I floating?’……..my mom smacked my face and WHAM………I’m back where I should be…with her in my face this time yelling.
I obviously survived to tell this tale……but the horror of all the needles, the cathater(sp?), the doctors and nurses endlessly walking in my room to give me meds/draw blood/ask questions……it was such a horror I never wanted to re-live.
This print was made from a hunk of wood I carved….every memory vividly set from the nightmares I had afterwards.

What category do I put this under? It’s not a mixed media…it’s not a painting…it’s not technically a photograph and it’s not digital…..help?
fear, doctors, hospital, patient, needle, horror, carlawick, sauriamami, laughter, discomfort

Painfully but brilliantly captured I think. I am also guilty of living my life as if I’ve been blessed with perfect health… when will we ever learn? ;)
Wow, Carla, what an amazing depiction of your frightening experience. I do love the grin on the “medical professional’s” face as if she’s actually enjoying the procedures. The looks on the faces of the people in the back are priceless! The “I told her….” “When will she learn….” etc looks. Excellent work, darling Carla. So glad you came back to us. :)

Excellent work and description, Carla….The title really caught my eye as I’m a nurse, although I haven’t worked as one for a few years! Hope everything is under control now!!
