Empty And Forgotten by Carla Wick/Jandelle Petters

As the snow fell, heavy, whispering silent memories around me…….I came back to this location found in NE Kansas up on the Missouri Bluffs….located outside a monestary.
This is only my 2nd trip. I was hoping to get more answers as to what the structures once were. This nest is located on a tree branch inside the largest of them……..the bird did not care anymore that humans once lived here. It was time for nature to re-claim her land.
I do not know anything about this place. No one I have asked can give me answers. I know others travel here like I do…there is a narrow trail that runs thru these ruins…not by deer…but by human footsteps.
A near-by well remains……with a stuffed rabbit thrown or lost inside…by a long-ago hand. From the design, stuffing, fabric…….I’d almost date it from my father’s childhood.
The structures are old. Built with bricks then later, fortified with cement. An electric pole was added at some point…it now lies fallen and almost hidden with the snowfall.
I love this place….the silence…….the forgotten ambience that rests heavily over it.
Maybe someday I’ll get answers…or maybe I’ll just develop more.

Wow! Powerful image. I’ve never been there, and yet already I love this place. Instant fave.

  • I had another even better write-up but somehow it got lost when I went to post…lol
Thank you Margorie…it’s almost like a ‘secret garden’ with only monks following it’s vieled walls

Wow….I’m with you on this one, Carla!….the need to know is so powerful. I know exactly how you feel. I like this winter image because it’s not overgrown with distracting vegetation as mine were last summer.I hope you find some answers :-)

  • I’m wondering if because it’s at a slightly higher elevation there’s less growth in this area? Walking thru in the late fall last year I didn’t remember having problems with the overgrowth. HOPEFULLY there isn’t much…it’s such a beautiful spot to me. Want to see when it’s green
