Sadly, with autumn’s colder weather coming in with a bang….the last of our reptiles slowly make it into their wintering homes.
This garter snake isn’t actually sticking it’s tongue out at me in definace, but, rather, to taste the air to see if I’m as evil as he thinks I am. Flattening his head, he shows just how big and ferocious he wishes he were.
One of our harmless species here in the US, they DO have fangs but no venom….and over-winter in large groupings…sometimes even being found WITH venemous snakes at that time (usually rattlesnakes).
One of the last to go into hibernation, these insect/rodent/worm eaters are also some of the first to come out and be seen in the spring-time.
