This is a Tiger Beetle……..the US is home to around %75 of the worlds population of this family of preditory insect.
The larva of these are famous for building ‘traps’ in sand………what LOOKS like ant holes that they’ll sit underneath the funnel of sand waiting for dinner to fall into.
This fellow is extremely fast moving…hopping and even flying…my son has even been bitten by one that didn’t feel to good.
This fellow actually stayed on this branch and allowed me a few photos but the area was still pretty dark so this was the best I could get.
I just recently saw another image of this insect here on Bubble…can’t remember who’d posted it but you should look around here as there’s lots of these beautiful insects here on Bubble.
