This wonderful Dagger Moth was shedding on top of it’s mushroom buddy….When I first came across this fellow I actually thought it had eaten another caterpillar………….soooo glad to know I was mistaken.
The little ‘spikes’ on these are completely harmless…just large tufts of hair that it uses to help intimidate those that find it.
Found in Jackson Park of NE Kansas this past year before the snow covered us completely.

OK, this is toooo cool! Not only an excellent detailed shot, but something you just don’t see everyday!

  • I think initially it was trying to play King of the Mountian? but realized he needed to take off the heavy ‘coat’ first to show his authority…lol

    fantastice capture!

  • do u know…one awesome thing about my area…is caterpillars are so much easier to find in the fall…….you can see DROVES of them along the roadsides in the grassy prairie areas as they’re looking for safe places to cocoon….the fuzzies are my favorite though. thanx!
