One of many copperhead snakes I’ve photographed, handled or avoided. These are venemous pit vipers…rarely killing but inflicting extreme pain with it’s venom.
A live-bearer, my experience with them have shown them to be a fairly non-aggresive snake. It prefers to blend to hide rather then striking to bite. I’ve only known 1 person to be bitten and she stepped on one barefoot in the night time.
I do not often go LOOKING for snakes, although they are some of my favorite wildlife, but when I FIND them…it’s as much a thrill for me to find a venemous one as it is to find a non.
This fellow was found in NE Kansas in a wooded area that I sometimes visit. He was the 3rd one that day so I decided to play it safe and stop stomping in it’s territory. I did, however, find several more species of snakes on this particular trip.

What a beauty! Love his colors and your ability to get close enough to capture these amazing creatures

  • thanx Karen, although I don’t ever EVER recommend handling dangerous animals…….I often have handled these. I actually almost stepped on this beauty before I realized he was there. I had my hiking stick with me so after photographing him I put my stick across his neck to pick him up right behind the jaw…then moved him a bit off my trail. he didn’t even struggle a bit and it was a warm day

I would never go near one of these if I could help it. Sigh… this one is kind of pretty though. ;o)

  • i often carry a pillowcase on me……..if i’m in an area that is trafficked by people……kids….pets……..i’ll catch them and relocate them. no need to have them there to bite or get killed if i can help it
and? i think copperheads are some of the most beautiful snakes here! :o)

Nice one Carla!! I now a fella that got bit by one of these in the hand, he lost most of his hands function. I myself normally shy from handling the venomous ones however sometimes I can’t help it, depending on the situation.

Oh Carla……It makes me weak to hear you talk about handling snakes….the same feeling I get when I hike with my grown kids and they deliberately stand near the edge of a cliff. When I go hiking, I pray NOT to see any snakes, and I seldom do….lol :-)

  • Ohhh…I can never get enuf of finding snakes Rusty!
Found a gorgeous yellow-belly racer yesterday but those things are FAST! no chance for a photo durn it
I’d probalby pass out if my son were to stand at the edge of a cliff…I’m not good with heights but even worse if my SON is on one
