The Cicada Killer is one of our largest wasps here in the US. It is an insect that prays apon the cicadas each summer…landing on top of them, paralizing them, and carrying them to their ‘den’.
I caught this one and put her in a jar to photograph…not knowing she would commit suicide. It would seem, this is a TRULY wild insect. They do NOT want to live in captivity at all….probably because they themselves hunt for hosts to eat alive.
This huge lady was found in NE Kansas 2 summers ago.

She, and your shot of her are beautiful and sad too.

  • I felt HORRIBLE when i came back out with my camera to photograph her and found her dead…i actually looked up info after that and read about other cases where this species has commited suicide rather then suffer captivity.
    a note here too?
i’ve never heard of anyone being stung by one of these giants…
