My son called me the other afternoon to tell me I needed to come to his bus stop to see a ‘big green caterpillar’. I hung up the phone thinking…‘ho, hum. just another bug’….but……I could see this thing half a block away! It was the size of a typical cigar…….and still has plenty of time to go before it’ll cocoon up. This is the HUGE beautiful Polyphemus moth larva…one of North America’s largest silk moth species.
Of course I let him go back up his tree to finish his stages (the branch he was on had fallen to the ground)…after taking his photos.
Photographed this past summer in NE Kansas.
