KILL ALL SNAKES

I was out hiking today along one of my favorite ‘mushroom trails’ and was able to find 9 new mushrooms I’d not seen before. Including 2 milky-caps! Very inspiring!
While on the trail….2 of the city’s paid lawn mowing people decided to hit the gravel road that lines the trail above where I was standing taking notes…....I now have a swollen eye, scratches on my arm and still picking gravel and chunks of wood out of my hair.
I’d also noted that in several places where I always enjoyed bright orange Day Lillies….....they’d all been mowed down!
So when I got home, I decided to give the city shed a call to ask about the lillies and to complain about the mowers. She ignored my complaint about the mowers…..and told me the lillies? Had all been mowed down because ‘someone called and complained about a black snake sighting’.......now…....where I live? The black snakes are a harmless variety of verminator. They do not have venom, they do not have fangs, and the MUCH prefer to slither away and rarely attack unless mis-handled.
I’ve a question….....if one is going to a wildlife park to enjoy wildlife…......y do they mow down the wildlife habitat because someone who doesn’t like snakes complained? The area that had the flowers was on the driving paths….....rarely any foot travel there.
So of course I tried to reason with the woman on the phone…who then told me? ‘If it got rid of all the snakes? I’d mow over every flower out there’.........isn’t that lovely. So of course, I called her an extremist and asked if she would tear out her yard to keep a spider from crossing thru…....and of course she said ,’Well,no, that’d be rediculous’.......MY POINT!
If u don’t like snakes? Stay away from them. I’ve never seen/heard of anyone ANYONE in the continental US getting ambushed by a killer black snake.
sigh ok….....complaints done.

    Bravo for you Carla!
Snakes are vital for our ecosystem.
Sorry to hear about your being pelted buy debris.
Luckily nothing large was ejected from the mower!

Carla, I hate snakes, but LOVE the lillies! That has to be the stupidest idea I have ever heard of!! If the snakes live there mowing down the flowers will not get rid of them!! I hope the next time that person who complained walks by the snakes scare the shit out of them!! I hate this type of action, the snakes were there before them and they will be there after, I only hope! Sorry that you will have to miss the lovely orange of those lillies, some humans are jerks! Good for you speaking up!!

i’ve a swollen knot under my eye from the biggest chunk that hit me? i just got lucky i had my glasses on and had my head back….
the lady on the phone? didn’t seem to care too much about the ‘ecosystem’....nor did she seem to want to hear me lecture her on it

i just wanted to ask her? if they mowed down the flowers…where do the snakes go next? 1.these snakes? don’t LIVE in the FLOWERS. they live in the WOODS ACROSS from the flowers…
2.the money that my cities tax dollars put in to help plant/maintain that area….....down the drain….3.i called the radio station and they’ll be calling me back to talk about the issue on the air
if we don’t help nature? who will?
    thanx for the comment…appreciate it!

In britain we have only one native venomous reptile, the Adder. I am listed as a snake handler with the rspca and also listed in the phone book for removal services. For some reason though, I seem to only get called when the people have already killed the poor snake in their garden and want me to then identify it. It’s horrible, I love snakes in particular, adders try their absolute hardest to stay out of view and only strike when they are trodden on or deliberately poked around. The other sad fact is, most of the time when I turn up at these peoples houses it is nothing more than a harmless grass snake.

I know the exact feeling! I’ve had people actually HIT me when I was trying to remove our garter snakes (similiar to u’r grass snakes)....when I heard this lady telling me this junk on the phone I was left temporarily speechless (for me? that’s a feat!). I actually started laughing and said “u’ve GOT to be kidding!”.......obviously she wasn’t.
I have been a nature director in the past and still lead hikes for people of all ages today…..and it always kills me? (no pun intended) how people let their fears get them. No personal strength in their minds at all.

You know how I feel about snakes, however mowing over the flowers isn’t the answer! EWhat I’d do is feed mice explosives, track them and set the explosives to go off if their heart stopped! That would take care of the problem!

THAT? makes me nervous…..maybe u should start switching to something’s that’s less inspiring…like…JAVA! u’ll never sleep again but at least u won’t get in trouble while visiting other countries indulging in it?

I haven’t been out of this country since 2004, and the last place I went was Amsterdam, (OUTSIDE THE US!) The last time before that, was when I was 3yrs old!

I can certainly feel your ire here!! I’d be p**ed off too if that happened around here. I mean, the woods/forests are where many animals live. Are we to assume that if someone complained about the chipmunks in the area someone would go hunting them? In their own habitat? That’s like going around knocking nests out of trees because you’re afraid of birds. *Ridiculous.

I hate that the flowers are gone – but I hate it even more that snakes were probably mowed down because of one person’s phobia. Like you said – if you’re afraid of snakes, don’t go hanging out around their homes!

exactly…and u’r avatar name fits this woman perfectly! lol
i was trying to explain to this person that mowing habitat wasn’t going to get rid of just the snakes but all kinds of life as well…..tried to explain that people go to the parks to ENJOY NATURE….not look at a bunch of dead mowed flowers…..tried to explain? that just because ONE person fears something? doesn’t mean EVERYONE fears it.
    didn’t do any good.
