Edible In the Wild

A GORGEOUS find today!
Hiking down along the Missouri River in a wooded location here in NE Kansas has it’s many benifits. The least of which are yummy things like this!
The Oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, is considered a ‘choice’ mushroom found year round…in my area however? It’s mainly found in the fall and early winter. LUCKY ME!
This is a white spored mushroom with either no stem or an off-central one. If the stem IS visible it looks almost ‘furry’....Once you’ve found one of these beauties, especially fresh, it is very difficult to mistake them again.
I collected this one and am cooking it in a dish with wild rice and chicken tonight! YUM

You must know your mushroom well, to pick them up in the wild and cook them.. I’d be worried. Is there anyway to identify which ones you can and can’t eat? I noticed some small brown ones the back yard the other day and wondered if I could eat them.

  • Carla Jandelle... replied 10 days ago

a smart friend of mine once said…’All mushrooms are edible, wether you survive is always the question’........lol
the only kinds I eat have absolutely NO question…i research research and research more before i even THINK to even taste-test them.
i’ve only a top 20 list of ‘unmistakeables’...and i’ve only eaten a couple outside that list.
