Looks like a caterpillar:)....lovely, whatever it is:)

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

i’m wondering if technically it IS called a caterpillar? more like ‘larva’ i guess….hmmm
    thanx Vanessa

I won’t be able to ID it… but I think it is very pretty. Is it some kind of a moth caterpillar?

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

i WISH! and i have to get a tad technical here…......it’s not a ‘true’ caterpillar? so it’s not a moth or a butterfly (hehe)

  • Bunny Clarke

    Bunny Clarke

It’s a gorgeous creature, whatever it is.

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

it’s considered one of the largest of it’s family while in larval form? i have to agree though…my son and i spotted him and just went WOW!

  • LavenderMoon

    LavenderMoon

    It has purple on it… I’m in love… : )

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

lol…wait till u find out what it IS!

It must make some sort of nasty – probably biting – fly, since its not a butterfly or moth. And that would be an insect that would both turn your stomach and come from a larva rather than a caterpillar. Which one? Aside from a mushroom wrecking one, my guess would have to be a very large fly. I almost said horse fly but those are not much bigger than house flies around here.

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

you’re VERY close! u gotta go to the 1st image though…type in *fly…and u’r almost there! lol (it’s not a fly…just part of the name)

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA

I’ve got nothin’. LOL! There are a pile of things on the first image but none seem to go with flies. LOLOL! The only thing not mentioned is something I know it’s not: a dragonfly. They don’t have larvae; they have nymphs, unless there’s a kind I don’t know about. And they aren’t gross tho.

Well, I cheated and went here so my last guess is blowfly. But a maggot isn’t a cute thing, no matter what it looks like and none of them eat shrooms. This is the closest I’ve ever come and I am more frustrated than ever!!!!! You are VILE, smart woman!!!

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

somebody beat u TO IT! lol
this is an Elm Sawfly:Cimbex americana!
    yack…i don’t do ‘blowfly’s lol

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

i’m still left in awe of it’s beauty Barbara….i’m not a huge ‘worm, maggot, larva’ kinda person but this one was just stunning to me.
it curled up the moment it knew it was ‘spotted’...thanx for commenting :o)

Like I didn’t even have to click on the image to know this was yours on the home page! Rock on sista!! Excellent (as always). Hey, guess what? I was driving out to the farm tonight and a coyote ran right across the road in front of my car. Luckily, I was only going 25 (the speed limit). I think there was an injured animal in the field across the way that I spotted less than a mile back … Anyway, CONGRATS CARLA!!!!
