Solomon's Seal

Solomon's Seal

Although this plant isn’t really credited with actually helping medicinally? At one time a popular herbalist stated that it was good for ‘taking away in one or two nights any bruise, black eye or spots gotten by falls or women’s willfulness, in stumbling upon hasty husbands’ fists’ -John Gerard (1597
Nice to know a plant can heal bruises inside and out.
The beautiful greenish/yellow blooms are seen dangling under the arched leafy stems in May-July in woods and along creeks and riverbanks.

i wonder if they had anything for husbands bumping into flying feet of clumsy wives? hmmmm
i love these little flowers though…u almost miss them cause they’re so tiny hiding under their leafy stems

    i know. bad me.
but kicking feet sometimes was all i had back then….....
have you ever heard the ‘Rule of Thumb’ law? it was a law put out that husbands could beat their wives with a stick no thicker around then their thumb.
no law was ever made for wives to be able to beat their husbands with anything (wow…look at that iron skillet…..)

    wayne51

I think if you used the iron skillet, hubby might need more than a plant to fix him self up. HaHaHa,

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

lol….welllll….when i think of the past that so many wives had to bare…..and the present that so many wives AND husbands bare…....i’d still bet the skillet wins over the fist eh? :o)

  • Tama Blough

I always wondered what Rule of Thumb meant.
I am fortunate that I have only been beaten up once, and by a stranger. I would be in trouble fast for using that iron skillet otherwise….

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

when i went to court just to get seperated…the judge actually pulled me in his ‘rooms’ to discuss that law with me. he wanted me to understand that it is no longer allowed? and that women shouldn’t think it’s ok to live with it. i did for too long…so glad i’m out of it and just wish so many others had ways to get away also
