One Puff of Breath

One Puff of Breath

These are a cup fungi called Peziza vesiculosa…growing out of some mulch that was piled up around 2 years back. I’ve been keeping an eye on this huge patch for the whole last year with many wonderful pleasures to be found any time of the year. Currently these EXTREMELY prolific cream colored fungi are the ‘crown’ of the beauty.
The smoke you see here is actually spore shooting out from the insides of the caps. By pure chance I found this out…........I was kneeling close to get photos of tiny snails inside the caps and sneezed while photographing. THEN a huge puff of white—ish spore puffed out of the cups! SOOO…....since I had a very willing 10yo kid hiking with me he got put to work till I got the image I was looking for.
Luckily the spore from these is basically harmless…....a LOT safer the Puffballs…and these cups are rather big also so photographing is pretty easy to catch. The largest cup here was the size of a soup dish!
