Black Rat Dinning Out

Black Rat Dinning Out

A beautiful young Black Rat snake…it’s not quite reached it’s full length…being only about 4 feet long. I found him crossing the road with a bird in it’s mouth. For me it was an unusual find as I didn’t really think that these guys would rely on roadkill for dinner…....even though? I know u can feed them frozen/thawed mice and such.

great shot!! Rat snakes are notorious for eating birds eggs, and as we see here the young. As long as they were still reasonably fresh he’d have no reason not to gobble them up, his sense of smell has probably lured him to these from past experiences from eating birds. Beautiful snake!!

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

he was definately happily stuffing himself as i drove my car up to him….he’d just started on this guy…stopped when i came over..didn’t move an INCH…just buzzed his tailtip….....when i got my photos and was leaving? THEN he spit the bird out and took off. felt bad over that…but at least he got a couple first. what i’d found interesting? was the birds had been run over by a car and already had flies on them…...........and he was STILL eating them!

Great shot. Timing is everything with these types of photos. I didn’t have my camera ready and missed a black racer taking out a lizard in a tree last week :(

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

oh wow…that’d have been a site! i’ve yet to get close to any other racer then the yellow-belly i had posted earlier. (i remember the buck in the mist on a night with full moon…......the nuns at the bargain bra bin…......the soldiers lined up on a perfectly sunny day at the ice cream cart…..) yeah..sigh it’s always nice to have the camera ready and aimed…....

Like I say again and again – creepy. It is amazing that you don’t die of fright every time you leave you house – me, I find your work compelling (maybe because I am so scared of creepy crawlies) It is like an road accident – you don’t want to look, but you can’t help yourself.

  • Carla Jandelle... replied

hehe…these guys are friendly! really…i let the slither allll over me..thru my hair…around my neck…....really. they’re NICE critters! well…the ones that don’t BITE anyway…hehe
but i have to agree? we as humans? have very odd fascinations…..it’s like…i’ll never figure out how a person would WANT to be a gynocologist? hrmmm…....or study spiders!.......or…be a body odor detector?........or…...............the list goes on…lol

Wow not sure I would want get to close to this one, are they poisonous ? brave capture Carla.

  • Carla Jandelle... replied 19 days ago

almost completely harmless Mark! they can be ‘nippy’ but all I’ve ever gotten from them is a couple tiny dots on my hand for being rough with them. they’re one of my absolute favorite snakes…a very elegant species

Fantastic image and find, Carla. Amazing. I suppose it’s is an easy feed for him. Has to be careful, he does not become a road ki;; himself. What a find, are they poisonous ?

  • Carla Jandelle... replied 19 days ago

honestly, Esther? If i’d continued driving i’d have run him over…..he was stretched all the way across the road.
they’re non-venemous….to me? harmless. most people don’t like ‘nippy’ snakes though and sometimes they can be. my son and i both handle these, though, without any issues (usually) :o)

these are fabulous animals, Amanda….I often use them for ‘nature programs’ i put on in the summer. they’re fairly calm…especially when handled correctly. :o)

This is a very cool image. . . he looks pretty lumpy so he much have been having quite a feast that day. . . Great capture…

  • Carla Jandelle... replied 18 days ago

I’m pretty sure he’d had a good meal already? But…..
I know some animals live on that ‘feast or famine’ mode…hopefully this one doesn’t.
    thanx for the comment!
