One for Hallowe'en

Midnight, October 31st; a full moon cast its eerie light across the graveyard. But Sam was not afraid; he’d worked the Hallowe’en shift before and he didn’t believe in ghosts.

Oh, there had been childish pranks – youngsters having their fun – but the sight of Sam usually sent them howling for home.

A movement behind the silhouette of an angel statue neither didn’t unsettled him.

He crept towards it, determined to play a trick of his own. When he reached the statue, there was no-one.

A whiff of pipe tobacco wafted in the cold night air. Sam sighed with relief; Ben, the gravedigger, must have been inspecting his handiwork. Sure enough, the unmistakable hunched figure disappeared silently down the path.

“Night,” called Sam.

Then his blood chilled. It had been Ben he had seen. And yet, how could it have been? Sam had only last week attended Ben’s funeral…
