Preface to my book Mays Lake

When the death of her adopted mother leaves her in a police station for questioning, Emilia Rose McClain just wishes for a home again. Soon after, she finds herself in Canada, living with a sister she never knew she had. Now given the chance to live a new life in Dira, Emilia attends highschool for the first time, and learns the excitment, drama and confusement that comes with being a Teenager.
However, Emilia has some additional problems. With the unexplained murders in Dira, strange dreams and possible visions of people shes never met, as well as a hesitant male who might not be telling her something, Emilia just wishes she could sit at May’s Lake in her best dress and drift away into the Celtic lore that has been teeming her mind.

The battle was over, the murderers sealed away. Justice had been served but at what price?

I shoved my sword deep into the blood soaked earth as I fell down onto one knee. It was the only thing that was keeping me from falling. Dusk was descending faster now, and the forest grew silent in the summer heat. Too silent for what should be a celebration. We had won, in a way. I wiped my brow with the back of my hand; blood, sweat and dirt brushed away.

Wolves nudged the dead bodies that lay around me. Their faces looked peaceful but the holes in their bodies where the Sluagh had feasted took away any happy thoughts. Some were still alive, barely, but breathing. It’s their job to find out who, just like it was to protect me.

Lycanthropes, I chuckled to myself. How did the Sidhe come up with them? Part man, part beast, all together a soldier, a guardian for Niall and me.

Fog rolled, while magic hovered the ground like in a silly fairytale, hiding us away from the rest of the world. Not that anyone would see. We were on a land that had yet to be claimed or even to be called a country. There were humans, yes, and I’m sure the natives had some name for it, but they were traveling north for the cooler air and better hunter grounds. I wasn’t sure if I blamed them.

Damn was it hot.

I let my head loll from shoulder to shoulder, loosening the tension in my neck before standing. My body screamed at me, but I ignored it. There was never time for pain. You just had to live with it.
But some things that you wanted to have time for, didn’t stick around. That was life, but we all deal with it. Right?

I could just make out his silhouette. He was tall, young and incredibly smart. His hair—a strange brown that would shine red in a certain light—would be tussled from the battle. He would be blaming himself for all the dead. Sooner, faster…all if onlys. It would be echoing in his head. He would need to walk it off, clear his head, just as he was trying to do now.

Yet somehow I knew he wasn’t going to come back. Not this time.

“My lady,” a young lycan bowed. Dear lord, he was barely fifteen. Soldiers get younger with every war. “We need to head back. The Sidhe need to finish the seal and start the ceremony, you know how they get.”

“Yeah, I know.” I mumbled. Because I was one of them, I thought. I used to be like that once.

“Both you and Sir Niall are to report immediately, M’am.”

“I’ll get there when I get there,” I said waving him off. He bowed again, and ran off, shifting into the beast he was. I would never get used to that.

I turned back to where Niall was just minutes ago. He was lost within the fog and woods. A tear rolled down my cheek and I quickly wiped it away. What will happen if the Sluagh break loose and there is only one of us to fight?

“Come back, a ghrá, not just for me, but for the future as well.”
