dove

I gave you all my heart
and my soul
But you never understood
a word that I said
It stayed in my mouth
while you stabbed me to tears
a cloud of ether
made hard over years
Now I swallow my words
when all they were was love
and learn to feed myself
instead of digging a grave
for a dove
I eat my seeds of letters
and feel every pointed ache
I never needed nails gouging
when I was my own rake
And though my heart has been left heavy
hardened like a pea within its shell
Inside is all the love I was born with
strong as heaven over hell
And from this distance
you all look so small
a speck of your petty desires
While I gave it my all
your love became ashes of little fires
