WILD PONIES OF ASSATEAGUE ISLAND
The wild ponies of Assateague Island roam the beaches, pine forest, and salt marshes, well adapted to their natural surroundings. They feed on the sand dune grasses, rosehips, bayberry twigs, and persimmons within this 37 mile barrier island they call home. The ponies have inhabited Assateague Island National Seashore since the 1600’s. The scenic magnitude of this park makes it the ideal atmosphere for these herds of beautiful animals.
