New Beauties in Disguise series © Sandra Vargas
The series is inspired by two of the most amazing passions of the Victorian era, the nature study and the fancy masquerade balls.
Entomology (the study of insects) was a popular hobby in the Victorian age, where nature lovers used to collect specimens like tusks, butterfly wings, minerals and other curiosities during their expeditions. I have a special fascination for vintage imagery (everything steampunk, Victorian, Gothic, and such) so my creative juices begun to flow combining both, the scientific and the mundane in just one simple piece. Playing with duality was such fun!
I like to think that my girls are actually fairies and nature explorers that enjoy looking for the perfect specimens for their fun, lavish masquerade balls under the moonlight!
