Surfers in Tofino, mixed media on canvas by

From a picture I took in Tofino Long beach ( Canada, British Columbia, Vancouver Island)
This time I used acrylics, dried pastels, oil pastels, inks, and encaustic.
All this with lots of layering and scrubbing.

I grew up in France but have been living in Canada for the last 12 years, I am currently located in North Vancouver and work from a studio on Pemberton Avenue.

I have two passions:
- Painting the effects of light with watercolor on paper through portraits and cityscapes
( http://www.watercolorpainting.ca/ and http://www.yupopaperpainting.com/ )
- Building complex textures and edges with acrylics and mixed media on canvas (http://www.mixed-media-paintings.com)

Such a great beach composition! Reminds me of visiting Tofino – still haven’t done this……

  • I am sure you would like it as there are many opportunities to shoot great pictures there :-)

This could be me and my old buddies except rarely did we wear full wet suits. With the exception of just a few winter months “Spring suits” were enough. Wonderful painting. (I might be a bit partial to the watercolour version.) But please understand that’s not a negative towards the mixed media version, as I truly like them both.

  • Thanks Jim, the Pacific is cold in Tofino so they will wear the full suit even in the summer months. I tried surfing once but found it very difficult :-)
Watercolors always seem to have a different light I found, than other media.

Great choice of subject Sandrine! That has to be some cold water to surf in I would think!

  • Yes, It is even too cold for me to dip my feet more than a few seconds:-)

Sandrine, May I say some of your work intrigues me, forget the digital stuff this has composition and feeling, infact I think one of your best works “Keep this up!” Ken

  • Thanks Ken, I am glad you liked it. It is one of my favorites too :-)

a beautiful composition and creation – the close-ups are an extra wonderful bonus I love them in their own right also

  • Thanks John ! I always feel that the picture is simplifying the painting and that I loose details, I am glad you liked the close-ups.
