Mission of Loving Mercy

Short story on how and why we adopted Loki

I’m on a mission. My older cat vanished, leaving my younger one in such a state, that we and his vet were worried about him. He had no idea how to be alone. We decided that a companion was needed. We headed to Cat Haven, to adopt a cat or kitten.

I stroll back and forth, looking into each enclosure, watching the antics of each of the residents. I picked up a little tabby girl, and she was rather placid. I had considered that a calm kitten might help with getting Keito out of his non-eating, non-sleeping depression. I put her down and looked some more.

I see one, totally oblivious to the examination. I squat down, and you notice me on your level. You attempt to push your face through the screen door to get to me.

“Can I see this one?”

Someone hands you to me.

I look into your little face, and you look trustingly up at me. You make yourself comfortable in my arms, somehow secure in the knowledge that I won’t drop you. You purr steadily, and slowly drowse off. I shift you slightly and you make a small mew of complaint. You look up at me, and rub your head under my chin, then shove your nose into my nostril, purring so hard it rattled my adnoids, and settle back down, kneading on my arm, making noises of contentment.

I look down and think “One day you are going to break my heart.” as you live so much faster than we do. Does that stop me from bringing you into my home and heart? No.

“I’ll take this one.”

been here, done this , and now that little ball of grey fluff with the huge eyes, approaches 19 years of age. I do not wish to face this again, the sense of time going so quickly. As our other cats made it to 20 years, he should last a bit longer! Regards, Heather
