The Little Mermaid was a fairy tale written by the famous Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. Normally the tourists can see her sitting on a stone by Langelinie in Copenhagen.
This Little Mermaid spent most of 2010 in the Danish Pavilion at World EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. This was the first time ever she left the country.
In the painting she is on her way back to Denmark, swimming in Huang Pu river on her way out to the open sea. You can see Pudong with the famous TV tower in the background.
There are also 8 red fish swimming the opposite direction. In China 8 is a lucky number, red is a lucky color and fish represent happiness. So going to China is expected to be a very good opportunity.
In this painting The Little Mermaid symbolizes the paradox that taking a different direction than everyone else, sometimes can result in better opportunities.
