Sande Elkins

Bustin' with pride!!

Ok, I’m being a bit indulgent here. This has nothing to do with art or photography except for the fact that my horse, Mouse, has always been my favorite subject/model. We had our first show yesterday. I was both excited and nervous about how my wild child would behave around all of those people. We were showing not in saddle but at halter and showmanship. For those of you who haven’t done this, it is harder than it looks. The horse has to respond to your cues immediately and the judging is very strict and specific. We had only been practicing for three days but Mouse was learning her lessons almost immediately! She trotted on the word and after just a few times with me showing her what I wanted ( you aren’t allowed to touch the horse in the arena) she would set up her feet on the word as well. I was worried about the pivot because our trainer/instructor, Brandy, had not intended for us to do showmanship and so hadn’t worked with us on that until Friday afternoon. Well, we placed second in our first class, Halter Mare. This class is judge mainly on the mare and her conformation but it is enhanced by how you handle and show her. So, I expect a first on this next time-ha. The second class was Showmanship. I was so nervous that I totally messed up. Mouse, who turns out to have a very competitive side, didn’t seem very pleased with me-ha. Third class was Novice Showmanship which we certainly fit into. After the class and before the places were announced, the judge walked over and told me that she wanted to see my horse. She took her from me and shockingly(!), Mouse went with her. She used Mouse to demonstrate to all of us how the pattern and class were suppose to be done. Then she announced that we’d won FIRST PLACE!!! Afterwards, she pulled me aside and told me that I needed to relax because Mouse was just wonderful and knew what she was doing. She also told me that Mouse had more Showmanship potential than any horse she’d ever seen!! That’s when I told her that we’d only been doing this for three days and this was both my and Mouse’s first show. She couldn’t believe me. She and the other two women standing there, all told me that surely the man from whom I bought Mouse must have shown her. I told them that I was certain that he hadn’t but no one believes that she could learn as quickly as she has. I was so proud of her and complete strangers kept coming up congratulating me and telling me how beautiful she is:)...I was pleased but Mouse of course already knew this-ha. Then, Brandy talked me into competing in the Trail In-Hand class. I was so scared since it is out in an open, unfenced area and yesterday’s course was the most complicated and difficult that I’ve ever seen since I’ve been doing the show photography there. Well, she was perfect and…..WE WON THE CLASS!!! Yes, that blue ribbon means the world to me and not only did we get more congratulations from both friends and strangers but Betsy sent the ribbon girls all the way out to the trail course to bring my ribbon to me. I was over the moon but Mouse took it all in diva stride as if asking me, “What did you expect but perfection from me?” ha…happy, happy:) ~Sande

    B R A V O both of you!
I haven’t heard of the halter and showmanship class but it sounds wonderful! I guess with all the movies using horses vocally trained it was inevitable that there would be such a class in horse showing.
They say circus horse performances are cruel but really Mouse taking to that new class so easily and so well just shows that horses love to show off and they enjoy the “tricks” that they learn.
Thank you for sharing with us the joy you have achieved and the brilliance of our favourite Sande Elkins equestrian model :o)

Thank you! Not everyone uses voice commands but Mouse takes to them so well. The man that I got her from had her trained to gait on voice command. The class is all about showing your horse on the ground and showing them at their best. The most amazing thing is how she sets her feet in proper position just on the word-set. No one else does that. They usually push them back and pull them forward until the feet are lined up. It is very difficult and you are only allowed so much time to get them moved into the right position.

Now that is very [bloody] impressive! :o)
Come to think of it I have in the past seen on TV and at the royal Ag show here in Melbourne funny little men in flat caps and women looking like they threw a great coat and gumboots over their wedding clobber franticly pushing and pulling at their horses then looking very important as if no one saw their horse’s faux pas [Kinda like the look of dignity you summon after you’ve tripped and flashed your undies or something! lol]
If that’s the class then to know your horse does that with you simply calmly saying “Set” that has got to win you a bucket load of points!
    B R A V O !!! :o) Wish I could see you both in action … if wishes were pennies I’d be richer than Rockerfella! :o)
    Chookas!

CONGRATS Sande And Mouse, I was starting to miss Mouse, thanks for Shareing your News with us, And please Keep us Posted.
Mouse puts me in mind of our Arab Guilding SAHALA AL TAKA, Is Mouse an Arab?

Many thanks to everyone for their kind wishes and kudos. I truly appreciate the encouragement and I’m still floating on cloud nine:).
People always thing Mouse is Arab which I take as a supreme compliment because I think the Arab is the most beautiful of all the breeds but, no, she is a Missouri Fox Trotter. It’s a gaited breed and the judge at the show suggested that I start showing her at all gaited shows instead of an open breed show. But I’m such a novice that I have no idea where there are any only gaited shows-ha. I called my friend Fran, who is the one who found Mouse for me in the first place, as soon as I got home from the show. Fran is big time into MFTs and has raised them for years and was owner of the 1999 World Grand Champion (and sweetest horse you’d ever want to meet) until his untimely death last year. She was actually headed out the door to a horse show at the moment the phone rang but she told her husband and friends that they would have to wait. She told me that she shouted to them, as she was running back toward the house, I know that’s Sande. She was so excited for Mouse and me and she kept asking, “You have the show bug now, don’t you? I know you’re going to want to keep doing this.” I think she may be right-ha. I know that it will never be as thrilling as Saturday’s show and wins but I just love how much Mouse appears to enjoy it:)
