We took in a pair of funny little mixed breed dogs in winter 2011 who had been picked up running stray in downtown Mansfield, Ohio, wearing matching sweaters. Someone had cared enough to put sweaters on them, but nobody called for them at this high volume and packed shelter.
The girls stayed with us for a year. Normally we evaluate bonded dogs, and usually, they can do just fine separated. Suzi and DJ (named after a shelter volunteer and the dog warden) were different. They never disagreed, and they seemed to each be an important part of each other’s personality. They were a happy, confident, and very friendly pair. But they sat with us with very few inquiries. Turns out a middle-aged pair of bonded dogs was not too easy to find a home for.
We never know when it’s going to happen – when that perfect application is going to come in. One morning, a couple of weeks ago, there it was. The sister of a former adopter who’d provided a great home to a senior dog we’d taken in were interested in a few of our dogs, but reading their application, it just screamed Suzi and DJ.
We did the home visit yesterday and it was love x 8. Mom, Dad, all 4 kids and both dogs thought each other were fantastic. Both dogs spent the visit working the crowd, making friends with everyone, with DJ flopping over on her back at every opportunity for bellyrubs. We loved the family as much as the girls did. It seems like a match made in heaven.
We will be updating the girls’ vaccines and then they will go to their forever home shortly. The little ladies had a long wait, but it seems that it was for a reason. We could not be more hopeful for what the future has in store for them.
This is DJ meeting her new human parent and one each of her new human sisters and brothers.
