Rodney, a mixed breed puppy, went through at least 5 changes of addresses in the first 13 weeks of his life, and came out with a badly broken rear leg. He’d been passed around and his caregivers at the time of his injury were waiting til they had more money to take him to the vet. It was a bad break and would’ve been very painful. One of the temporary owners found out about how he was being treated and ordered them to turn the pup back over to her, and she got him in to the vet. When she received an estimate of $3000-5000 to fix his leg, she tearfully told the vet she did not have that kind of money at 19 years old, and surrendered him for euthanasia.
Thankfully, the vet clinic where he was to be put to sleep was the one where Mel, codirector of the rescue I’m with, had started working a week earlier, after graduating vet school. She began her second week as a veterinarian doing the complex surgery herself, cutting costs and saving his life.
Rodney spent the next month with us, recovering unbelievably from his surgery. Below I’ll post a video clip of him taken just 5 days post surgery. I’ve shot him when I’ve seen him in his time with us, but this is my fave from what will probably be the last shoot with us – he goes to his new home this weekend. His new parents are a childless couple who have waited very patiently as they went through the process but are beyond excited to be bringing him home.
