The Australian Cattle Dog is, I think, one of the most difficult breeds to own if you aren’t experienced and savvy. If you are and you like to do stuff with your dog, they are brilliant. The intensity here is very typical of the breed. Someone once described them as being very much like a border collie, with their obsessions, their brains, and their need for loads of stimulation…except they’re serious. I think that is a very accurate description. They can also be very scrappy biteyheads who are not always great with other animals and kids. They are known for putting on shows, even with those they trust – for example, growling and snarling when you dry their feet with a towel, or do things they don’t care for.
I have always loved the breed. The rescue I’m with has a focus on the ACD, and our first rescue ever was a cattledog cross. I never thought I was meant to own one. Sam only ended up fostering me because he came with multiple unprovoked bites, and local animal control wanted him put down. He does therapy work, bite prevention work, obedience etc and is my test and demo dog. Sam really is a spectacular little cowdog. :)
Sam is a rescued Australian Cattle Dog living in Ontario, Canada.
