Isis is one of 150-200 dogs discovered on a property in Ohio. There were dozens of dogs in the house, dozens more in the garage and other structures on the property, and the elderly couple had even bought trailers to put dogs in, which lived like puppy mill dogs, in stacked crates with minimal to no care.
Isis appears to be a border collie cross, probably with retriever, as most of the dogs were retrievers and crosses.
It is suspected that while the motive of the couple was their ‘love’ for the dogs, it was a house of horrors for those there. No dogs ever saw vets and they were breeding without any control. It’s suspected that there were scores of puppies being produced there, the majority of whom were killed or died due to the conditions. There is also evidence that there was a lot of mortality and “euthanasia” of adult dogs as well. There were dogs bald from mange and scores of medical issues, from untreated infections to orthopedic issues.
Isis had a litter about 2 months before being rescued, which were killed at birth by an unknown dog. She spent her whole life in a hog barn and was unsocialized with people, having probably been handled only minimally if at all.
Barlee’s Angels(barlees.org) became involved in October 2013. At that time there were approximately 60-70 dogs still needing to be moved. We did not think we had any hope of getting many of these dogs out – our small grassroots group had never taken on a rescue of this magnitude. Somehow, we have managed to rescue and rehome about 45 as of April 2013, with about another 20 to go. Isis came to us in late March and is doing surprisingly well. She is not ready to be touched yet, but is being hand fed and leash walked (that is a feat in itself!) and is crate-trained and doing well with house-training. None of these dogs are aggressive, just nervous and unsocialized. She is so beautiful, I came up with 7 keepers from our shoot, but this is one of my favourites.
Isis is available for adoption.
