Mother Murphy's Mural 1993-95
This is a mural I did in the most kick ass head shop / record store ever. Mother Murphy’s is located downtown Normal, Illinois. If you want rare, cheap, clean, vinyl this is the place. I owe my extensive punk rock vinyl collection to Mother Murphy’s. I tried to find a website but it seems none exists. There are some pics and other info out there with a web search.
The mural was first painted in 1993 and then I added more to it each of the next two years. I would go in after the shop closed and stay until the first customer came in the morning. I had to avoid customers because the mural is in the only entrance which is a narrow stairway. The idea for the mural is that there are characters going up and down the stairs on each side. The owner and I liked the existing graffiti well enough to leave it and make it look like the characters were in front of graffiti walls. It was very hard to photograph because of the tight space.
The Elvis has two heads and three legs for those keeping
count…

Wow, how fun. I do love the graffiti element; it’s so perfect behind your characters.
