Gray Matter

Gray Matter

I do a fair amount of work like this. I call it doodles, but it is something more concentrated than the typical phone scribble. Some pieces contain something recognizable, some are pure abstraction. Other than planning out the face, the fill in all freely flows from the fingers via a ball point pen.

You should put this in the ‘Finks of Ink’ group. For sure!

  • Sam Dantone replied

    Thank you Nick,
I would love to get this over to the Finks of Ink, I guess I wore out my welcome though. They only accept five pieces from any artist. Maybe I can get them to switch some of my pieces out.

you should be able to rotate your group pieces yourself by unticking and then some ticking of boxes matey..

  • Sam Dantone replied

    Sounds cool, must learn more…

    What’s a ticking? Did you say tickling…?

I have a couple of ticks already, but fortunately I keep them mostly under control…

You are probably insulting your own work by calling this a doodle … it’s MUCH MUCH better than a doodle. Difficult to know how to define what constitutes a doodle though. Maybe a rule of thumb would be that anything that takes longer than the average phone call isn’t a doodle … how about that :)

  • Sam Dantone replied

I guess my bubble missed this comment…
I’ll take the compliment, however, I guess I am referring to two things. I term the technique doodling, and as compared to my larger finished paintings I see this as a doodle. This particular piece did take more hours than some of my paintings, but I just can’t see it in the same light.

    I have doodle issues!

Great pic, i like your style, intricate, like mine =)

  • Sam Dantone replied

Hey Natasha, Thanks for stopping by. I am very interested in the fact that there are a lot of artist around the world who work in this style. I would like to see something written about it. A coffee table book perhaps. Maybe a redbubble group…

I too am suprised, i never have a particular thing in mind when i draw. I just draw, work from an area and keep adding and turning my work around until i can see something in it. Then i shape to suit what i can see. Its unique, thats what i like about it, even where there are people with similar styles, there is still always a small difference.
