Lost Boy

Frank Beardmore was my cousin on my father’s side. He passed away a few years back. I wrote this shortly after I heard the news.

His mother carefully cared for her nest
Lovingly, caringly doing her best
To care for her children
Keep them well fed
Teach them to live so they might be led in the right direction
And maybe be happy;
They got a great start but he was unlucky;
He ventured out and kept getting lost
Would find his way back, but one day did not
And then he carried on going the wrong way
Until one day he found he’d gone so far astray
That every turn seemed to be the wrong one
And now he felt bad ‘cause despite what she’d done
To start him the right way, walking the right path;
She gave him her best and he got a great start;
Now he felt like he’d failed her, let everyone down,
He fell even lower, and started to drown
In these horrible feelings he made for himself
He just kept on falling and was overwhelmed
By one terrible thought that said;
“Life’s just not worth it”
“Just make it real quick and then it shouldn’t hurt”
“It will just last a second, and then it will end”;
This horrible life that he made from a trend
Of following the wrong people along the wrong roads
Until the roads ended with nowhere to go..
But there was always a way he could turn
For him it’s too late now, if only he’d learned
That it wasn’t too late to go back to the nest
Where his mother was waiting, relieved;
Impressed that he managed to finally find his way back
Ready to help him and show him the track
That leads him to life and recovery
But all he could think was that
“No-one loves me”

So if you start thinking that no-one will miss you
Think of your family ‘cause no amount of tissue
Would dry up the tears on a face, in a heart
Of the people whose love gave you such a great start.

    Wow! I’m sad to hear about your cousin’s untimely death. A sad story. But, perhaps we can learn something through your heartfelt words. Thanks for sharing!
