I’ve seen these before at the beach but I thought it was the strong winds making these ‘sandballs’. Crabs huh? Very interesting! I love the circular pattern.

like crop circles made in sand.
I’ve known about this type of crabs or bung beetles but I had no idea that they made this pattern. I find that this ability is fascinating. How did they know where they were, each time, relative to the center. I’m in eastern US and have spent many years on the beach. So, it’s nice to experience what your day there would be like, thanks.

Great capture Sal, what an intriguing little critter. Isn’t nature just so inspiring. I don’t blame you for watching him I would have sat their fascinated and watching him for hours!

I did a painting years ago for a sth American client, it was an Aztec dancer dancing to the sun, the headdress was strikingly like this shape and pattern, and yes the size in comparison to the dancer was pretty much the same shown here with the crab. There is a mystery here, that’s for sure.

I love the way the pattern radiats outwards. I was at the beach the other afternoon and my son was trying to find his name in the little balls made by the crabs he found all the letters lol

I’m not sure what kind they are they are a bluey silver colour he found each letter individually

I’ve never seen a crab do that, it’s amazing…beautifully captured!

Saw these crabs on Fraser Island a few weeks ago but their balls werent quite in such patterns, well caught. I’m told they are slodier crabs, – after the army they march in. will try to confirm soon.
