Little fella

Crab on Railay east beach in Krabi province Thailand,
He would make little balls with his nippers and kick them behind him into the pattern that you now see. He was miniscule and i would watch him while laying on my towel..he wasnt alone..thousand others would make this mosaic pattern over the beach..

like crop circles made in sand.
I’ve known about this type of crabs or bung beetles but I had no idea that they made this pattern. I find that this ability is fascinating. How did they know where they were, each time, relative to the center. I’m in eastern US and have spent many years on the beach. So, it’s nice to experience what your day there would be like, thanks.

Great capture Sal, what an intriguing little critter. Isn’t nature just so inspiring. I don’t blame you for watching him I would have sat their fascinated and watching him for hours!

  • salsbells69 replied

You just couldnt help be fascinated by him. He weaved his little magic from ‘go to whoa’. I dont know why the patterns come out like they do. Maybe its a breeding time thing. Nopt sure. But they were experts and what they did none the less. Thanks Simone.

  • JohnScott

    JohnScott

I did a painting years ago for a sth American client, it was an Aztec dancer dancing to the sun, the headdress was strikingly like this shape and pattern, and yes the size in comparison to the dancer was pretty much the same shown here with the crab. There is a mystery here, that’s for sure.

  • salsbells69 replied

I would and should find out ‘Why?” It will be my next challenge. They are so small..so identifying them might be hard but cant hurt to look.

  • barnsis

I love the way the pattern radiats outwards. I was at the beach the other afternoon and my son was trying to find his name in the little balls made by the crabs he found all the letters lol

  • salsbells69 replied

Wow..fantastic. Were they the same crabs do you think? Or did they make the same patterns? I am trying to find out what kind they are and why they do this.

  • CateTownsend

    CateTownsend

I’m not sure what kind they are they are a bluey silver colour he found each letter individually

  • Amanda McLennan

  • TubularBelle

    TubularBelle

How long did it take him to do that?
I wonder what the purpose of it is?
Great shot. Why did you take it at that moment, had he stopped, or was the tide coming in?

  • salsbells69 replied

    Thankyou Ms Belle.

In answer to your questions..firstly it took him the whole time the tide went out until it came back in again. I suppose his purpose is just to clean out his little burrow. I took it at that moment because i was sunbaking down there with camera in tow and had observed them over a few days making mosaic patterns all over the beach. Its a tough life for him/her as they do these wonderful things and then the tide comes in again and washes it all away!
