Long Tailed Macaque II

Long Tailed Macaque II

Taken whilst on canoe in Ao Nang Thailand. About three hours into the tour this group of lively (and hungry) Macaques managed to find us as we were enjoying some refreshments. This particular charming young one sat on my foot. Wild as they are and not nearly afraid of us enough..they tend to be a bit intimidating. I didnt move my foot or much else..just hoped he would continue on his merry way..
They have big teeth you know :)
He is wet from swimming to the canoe and trying to raid the esky that was nesting comfortably between myself and my canoeing partner at the time. I think he got some pineapple in the end..not my foot..lol.. :D
This isnt the greatest of photos..its more to tell you of the experience you can have with the wildlife~! The interaction..even though intimidating can bring you up close and personal. This is one of those moments :D

  • Greta McLaughlin

    Greta McLaughlin

Stunning capture! What an adventure that must have been! I can’t believe you even got a shot off, you sound like you were frozen with fear. Wonderful work.

  • salsbells69 replied

Thankyou Greta..yes….its like you know when you are so close to something that if you breathed it would displace it or annoy it..well it was like that..my hands and forearms were flat up against my chest..sneaking up to take the shot.. At one point he was sitting directly behind me leaning on my back..that was a little too close for comfort..he must have thought i was a tree..or something..lol. I have a scar on my right ring finger from a monkey bite when I was two. Its a permanent scar circumnavigating the top of my finger with a permanent crack in the fingernail. i dont remember the bite..but I know they can..and of course unfortunately..there is rabies around too.

I’m stunned and impressed, Sal. Totally amazing, This wild wooly hairy (though beautiful) thing at your feet in your CANOE! While you’re in THAILAND! And you’re taking pictures and FEEDING it pineapple! The monkey swam to your canoe for a snack! You’re amazing. I’m proud of you for sitting out the adventure, wow. I wonder if he told bedtime stories that night in his tree to the little ones about the dangerous human encounter and the pineapple he risked his life for. What a life you both lead.

  • salsbells69 replied

LOL..Barbara~ I love the way you break down things..read and interepret images and emotions, experiences etc. It’s fantastic..That is probably why you are the talented artist you are. Thanks so much for this wonderful comment..its put a big smile on my face~! :D

Yep! I wanna do it! Thailand is on my list of places to go. I also want to do a mahoot course where you trek on an elephant for 3 days and camp in the jungle with it…

  • salsbells69 replied

Jane. you will love it. There is an elephant school near lampung which is like a volunteer centre. Its up north but below Chiang Mai. The monkeys that I experienced were down south but they are everywhere over there..no shortage of them at all. But if you want these particular ones..then I can assist!

  • lareejc

    lareejc

wow! fantastic capture…and I love your bio on him…foot and all! did he try to take your camera as you took his picture? and how many pics did you take of him?

  • salsbells69 replied

Hi lareejc. He didnt try and touch my camera funny enough. He was only after food. Funny though all the monkeys I encountered usually only wanted food. They didnt approach me like this one. But then again, he had swum over to the canoe..so I guess sitting on it was like sitting on a tree branch. I took some other photos of mother and baby and only one like this of this one.

  • Antanas

    Antanas

  • JayVee

    JayVee

Wouldn’t be too sure that it’s not the greatest of photo’s. Very well captured. The wet hair says it all what these will do to get a bit of food. I visited Gibraltar a while back and was bitten by one of the monkeys there, not a good experience.

  • salsbells69 replied

Thankyou JayVee. So sorry to hear you got bitten..rabies and all..injection after injection to make sure youre ok..infection…oh dear. You must have come out the other side ok..though which is comforting..but yeah NOT a good experience by any means..they are wild and will scavenge for anything..you were unlucky.

How sweet is this little fellow ,love how he is all wet, fantastic shot. it must be amazing seeing them in the wild Sal

  • salsbells69 replied

Thanks Kathryn ~! It is amazing..to see them in thier own habitat. Alot of these monkeys hang around temples and where tourists gather so you dont see what they do in the wild much. Watching these swim..was a amazing enough in itself.
