Beyond the Sea by Sally Sargent

This Mixed Media Collage Painting is a translation of Alfredo Estrella’s fine photograph named “Lost in Music.”

The painting is eleven inches by fourteen inches and is done on Arches 300# cold press paper using acrylic, watercolor, cut paper collage and india ink.

This translation evolved from an experience I had while visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California. They have a wave machine there that causes a wave to break over a large plastic or glass half dome while you are standing within the half dome. The sound and motion of the wave breaking around you is awe inspiring. The sound and movement from a beautiful melody on the violin creates a similar feeling within me. I thought I would blend the two experiences into one for my translation of the photograph.

When viewing a group of musicians or listening to music the musicians blend into their instruments for me and they sing as one.
In all of my work I have a fondness for bold color, clear values and wild texture.
My imagination works overtime. I hope you enjoy viewing my work.

Don’t know what’s more amazing Sally, your translation or your description. That you experience such emotion from the sound of a violin doesn’t surprise me one bit when I see the emotion generated through your art.
    Absolutely fabulous work!!
