CAT lino print
lino print on brown paper
This is my largest print, measuring about 50cm by 35cm.
It was made by chiselling out a piece of Linoleum.
Unlike with the collograph, a lino print works backwards, removing all the areas I wished to remain white. In sucha large piece, this took quite a long time to achieve, adn there were several slips and injuries to fingers along the way!
the plate took me about 2 weeks to complete, and I still had no idea whether it would work until that first test run through the press!
Working in reverse (as the image will be printed back to front) is quite triccky and confusing, and the first few runs through the press were disastrous!! Lots of fiddling about and adjusting pressures, trying different paper, colours, ... until finally i settled on the brown, rather textured surface.
I dont’ knwo what else to say, but am happy to answer any questions you might have (o:

excellant work!!
Elaine van Dyk
Absolutely beautiful work, Sally. The contrast of fine line-work and solid black areas for the cat and the top right is extremely effective. A lovely balance in the composition. Looks great on brown paper too.

Thank you to EVERYONE! I’m simply overwhelmed by all your kind words and support.
Just fo rthe record, this particular print is my absolute favourite piece, for quite a few reasons. It’s the first (and only) completed piece I’ve been able to look at and say …Yep! that’s finished.
I’m so happy you like it too.

Megan Russell
wow…so moving
Sally Hanreck replied
Thank you Megan. I have to admit, this is probably the only finished piece of my own art I’ve ever felt affection for. I have a very old cat who’s been with me for 14 years, which might explain a few things. (o:

Just beautiful, and familar… i dont usually like lino cuts, as i find them too harsh. This one however is just so full of warmth…..i love it!
Sally Hanreck replied
thanks Katie! what a great compliment. I’m really moved by your reaction, especially since printmaking isnt’ my “thing”, but I experimented a little last year, producing only a handful of pieces. I found the entire process a bit overwhelming and “clinical”, as I am more of a slap dash, instant gratification sort of a girl… but I have to admit, I really love how this print came out. It conveys the mood I was aiming for, adn that’s all i ever hope to achieve.

have always enjoyed lino prints. this is great.
Sally Hanreck
I’m so glad you like it. I haven’t made any new prints since producing this series – I found the whole process excruciatingly painful and frustrating, and not always so rewarding – I had so many stuff-ups before getting just one right! It is a slow, complicated process and I am terribly impatient by nature. But teh ones that did work out were worth the effort, I guess. As with childbirth, in time I might forget the agony and be willing to do it all over again….. maybe. lol
Martin Tanton
Really like this one. It may have been a difficult process, but your patience was well rewarded.
Sally Hanreck replied
thank you Martin (o:
Patience is the hardest discipline to master as far as I’m concerned, but comments like yours make it well worth the effort.
Paul Compton
Exquisite. Very beautiful.

I found this while voting in the nude challenge you entered it in. At the time I had not stopped to visit your gallery. Thanks for faving some of my work and prompting me to visit and watch you some more.
Tama Blough
Great cat – reminds me of mine when he comes to love me up – nice work all around!
Sally Hanreck replied
Thak you Tama. I have a very old cat who’s been with me since i was still in my teens. He’s now in his late teens himself, and was the inspiration behind this piece. I’m glad you like it x
Christianna Berg
im impressed with the lack of ink pickup where her skin is!
Sally Hanreck replied
believe me, Christianna, it took several goes and loads of adjustments just to get one clear print. I had to practically cut right through the plate in some places! Thank you so much for noticing! It drove me NUTS trying to get it right!! I produced perhaps 3 good prints out of about 20!
Alexandra Felgate
This is really lovely…such movement and feeling in the cat. I can imagine how long it took to cut! Hard work, I know. (I have the scars to prove it lol)
Sally Hanreck replied
want to compare battle scars? lol thanks, Alexandra. your comment means a lot to me x
Christianna Berg
in the future, selective inking can help or you can place a “blocker” on parts you want white (meaning put a clean piece of paper between the area u don want to pick up and the paper you’re printing it on)
my one print of a still life i had to do that for the forehead of the statue
Sally Hanreck replied
wow. thank you so much for the advice! this is what i lovemost about this place. the feedback and support from people like yourself.
thanks Christianna x
catnip addict ...
look at that naked lady and her pet, gives a whole new meaning to the word pussy. lol!
Sally Hanreck replied
LOL! a little too much of the potent green stuff, me thinks ;)
Alan Hogan
Reminds me of old poster art by Toulouse Lautrec . The bed reminds me of Van Gogh. This picture is very impressive, with an aged feel about it.
I especially like the work on the woman’s hand and the cat.
Good work Sally, well done!
Sally Hanreck replied
thank you Alan (o: van gogh and Lautrec are two of my favourite artists, so that was quite some compliment! you made my day, in fact. thanks again (o:
Varry
Hi there, lino is so hard to do [thinking in reverse etc..]and you have done this with such a fabulous line..it looks like a drawing …well done.
Sally Hanreck replied
Thank you Varry! it did take weeks to chisel out the plate, and there were times I thought it would never come out right! so I really appreciate your comment, more than you could possibly know! (o: x
sugargirl
This is simply awesome.
