Selling Rights To A Image

Red Bubble is a great place to show your work whether it be sales, magazine features, commisions I encountered one recently someone found one of my images and wants to buy the rights to it.

I have never encountered this before and was wondering if anyone, has any tips of handling such a request that they would like to share

Once you give up rights to that image, they own it and can reproduce as they wish, so make sure you sell it for a good price !!!!!!!!!!

It all depends on what they want it for as to how much to charge.

Generally speaking you wouldn’t give up your right totally; unless they’re paying a fortune that is.

Hi Phillip, I have now since the interest in one of my images for a book cover. I believe most photographers do not sell the rights to an image, they retain the rights but sell copywrite instead.

Ask them what they want to use it for, and how much they want to pay. Full exclusive “They can do anything they like with it, whenever they want” rights, would definitely not come cheap – keep it real, but don’t undercut yourself.

Buying the rights means they will pay a substantial amount of money for it. Good for you, Congratulations! You will give up all use of that image and never be able to use it anywhere or sell it again. Now, if you were to take a similar shot …. ? Keep us posted Cheers B-)

Philip, I suggest you do some research on ‘License Agreements’ to see how the various terms of usage are set out…Other than that you might be at the stage where a licensing agent could assist you with their area of expertise. It would be a shame to give up all rights to your own work.

I just posted a journal yesterday asking the same question but no one responded. A german company wants to buy the full rights to one of my pictures. Now they want to see the rest of my work on the same subject. I sent them a very low res set of fifteen samples and they are interested in quite a few of them. My question was how much should I charge. They want to use them for coorporate advertising. I looked them up on the web and they are a very reputable company. I quoted $500.00 U.S. each for the first five or $400.00 each if they purchase more than five. They responded today with an affirmative and now they are deciding on which one (s) they want. Wish me luck

The Arts Law Centre of Australia has downloadable sample contracts here:

Before naming your price ask what their budget is for the terms and conditions they require…
