It’s amazing how fascinated we are with the macabre spectacle of a killer who daily wields power over life and death for so many creatures. This large pride male lion (Panthera leo) takes a few moments of relaxation at sunset before heading out on the business of killing.

Although Canadian by birth, I grew up in Africa and from an early age travel became a regular part of my life. As a result I developed an early passion for my two great loves, Africa and aviation. Being fortunate to return to Africa every year with our own safari company “Explorations Africa”, all of my photos of wildlife are taken in their natural and unstaged settings. you are so right about our fascination with the life-death struggle – look at the popularity of the Colosseum era, bull-fighting, cock fighting, boxing etc … aaaagggghhhhh!!!

  • I certainly don’t understand the magnetism they exert over us, but have to admit that it’s certainly there. It’s amazing how often we whizz by the other fascinating stuff in order to get to the ‘scary’ animals.

A great portrait Dan, wonder what his thoughts were? :-)

  • Thanks very much Macky. This was an interesting situation as he was watching one of his lionesses who had just killed a porcupine and wasn’t sharing. I was amazed at her boldness in keeping him at bay. Maybe he was contemplating the deteriorating state of affairs that allowed a lioness the boldness to even consider challenging him.
