Being the eastern most extension of the Kalahari Basin, Hwange National Park experiences the unique very hot and red sunsets typical of this desert region. Months without rain compounded by the slightest breeze whips the loose sandy soil into the atmosphere creating a spectacular red/orange haze, turning sunrise and sunset into a glorious affair. For the elephants (Loxodonta africana) though, it’s a difficult time of waiting for the rains that forces them to congregate at any and every source of water.
