With jaws so powerful that they can break through the leg bone of a giraffe, you do not want to mess with the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta)! Much maligned as a slobbering scavenger and heartless killer, they none the less are facinating creatures. Highly social, their eerie communications between each other of slowly crescendoing whoops and fanatical sounding cackling laughter are like music to the ears of any lover of the African bush…..unless you’re the unfortunate on the receiving end of those massive teeth!!
